What is SEO?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work that helps your business appear when people search for what you sell. It covers your website, your Google Business Profile, your listings across the web and the reputation signals, like reviews and links, that tell search engines you're trustworthy.
For a Kelowna business, SEO usually means showing up for searches like “electrician Kelowna”, “dentist near me” or “best winery tour West Kelowna”, both in the regular results and in the Google Maps pack at the top.
Why does my business need SEO?
Because that's where buying decisions start. When someone needs a service, most of them search first, compare two or three options and contact one. If you're not in those first few results, you're not in the decision. Unlike ads, the traffic SEO earns doesn't stop the day you stop paying, so it compounds over time.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO focuses on the searches with local intent, where Google shows a map and three businesses. Google chooses those businesses based on relevance (does your profile match the search?), distance (how close are you to the searcher?) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed are you?).
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with the right primary category
- Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere online
- Add real photos and post updates regularly
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review, and reply to all of them
What is website SEO?
Website SEO makes each page easy for search engines to understand and worth ranking. That means a fast site that works well on phones, one page for each main service, clear titles and headings, helpful content that answers real questions, and structured data (schema) that labels your business details for machines.
Technical problems can quietly undo all of it. A site that renders only in JavaScript, has duplicate pages or returns the wrong status codes may never be indexed properly, no matter how good the content is. See how we handle this in web design.
What are AEO and GEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the direct answer: the featured snippet, the voice-assistant reply, the FAQ result. It rewards content that asks a question and answers it clearly in the first sentence or two.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is about AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. These tools summarize several sources and often name specific businesses. They favour businesses they can verify in more than one place, with consistent details and clear, quotable information. Read more on AI search optimization.
How long does SEO take?
Local improvements like a better Google Business Profile can show results within a few months. Ranking organically for competitive services usually takes four to twelve months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in a few weeks is either targeting keywords nobody searches or taking shortcuts that won't last.
How do I know if SEO is working?
Track leads first: calls, form submissions and direction requests from search and your Google profile. Then look at the leading indicators: impressions and clicks in Google Search Console, Map Pack positions from a Kelowna location, and whether AI tools mention your business. A good SEO report shows all of these, in plain language.

FAQ
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
For most local service businesses, yes. Search is where buying decisions start, and the visibility SEO earns keeps producing leads after the work is done.
Can I do SEO myself?
You can do the basics yourself: claim your Google Business Profile, ask for reviews and keep your details consistent. Technical fixes, content planning and reporting are where a specialist saves time.
