How does a Kelowna business show up in ChatGPT?
A Kelowna business shows up in ChatGPT when the AI can find it, verify it and quote it. That means a fast, crawlable website with clear answers, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details across directories, real reviews and mentions on local sites the AI already trusts. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but you can make your business the easiest one to recommend.
This guide explains how AI tools choose sources, what to fix first, and how to test what they say about you. It's the work we do in AI search optimization for Okanagan businesses.
What's the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
They're three names for overlapping work, aimed at different places your customers look for answers.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Goal | Rank your pages in search results | Be the direct answer | Be named and cited by AI tools |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results, Google Maps | Featured snippets, voice assistants, FAQ results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews |
| What matters most | Relevance, links, speed, reviews | Clear question-and-answer content | Consistent facts, trusted mentions, crawlable pages |
Do I need SEO, AEO and GEO separately?
No. They share the same foundation, so one good plan covers all three. AI tools lean heavily on search indexes and the same trust signals Google uses, so a business that's invisible in regular search rarely shows up in AI answers. Read the short version in SEO vs AEO vs GEO, or the basics in our complete guide to SEO.
How do ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity choose sources?
Each tool works a little differently, but they share a pattern: for a question like “best electrician in Kelowna” or “who does web design in West Kelowna”, they search the web, read a handful of sources and write a summary that names the businesses those sources agree on.
ChatGPT uses web search for questions about current, local information. OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler is what surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, and recommends allowing it in your robots.txt if you want to appear.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's own index. Google says there are no extra technical requirements: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in regular Google Search. In other words, good SEO is the entry ticket.
Perplexity shows its sources openly, so you can see exactly which pages it relied on. That makes it a useful place to test: if it cites a directory with your old phone number, you know what to fix.
Which signals matter most for local AI answers?
For local businesses, AI tools keep coming back to the same kinds of evidence:
- Google Business Profile. Complete categories, services, hours, photos and a clear description. It's one of the main places Google and other tools get local business facts.
- Reviews. A steady flow of genuine reviews on Google and relevant industry sites, with replies. AI summaries can echo what reviewers say.
- Consistent NAP. Your name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Yelp, BBB and industry directories. Mismatches make your business harder to verify.
- Local mentions and directories. Listings and mentions on sites that already cover the Okanagan, such as chamber of commerce member directories, tourism listings, industry associations and local news.
- Answer-style pages. Pages that ask a real customer question and answer it in the first sentence or two, so the AI has something clear to quote.
- Structured data. Schema markup that labels your business name, address, services and FAQs for machines.
- Crawlable, fast pages. Content that's in the HTML when the page loads, not hidden behind JavaScript or blocked in robots.txt.
Does structured data or llms.txt help with AI search?
Structured data helps machines read your facts accurately, and it supports rich results in Google. But Google is clear that you don't need special schema, AI text files or new markup to appear in AI Overviews. Treat schema as good housekeeping that supports consistency, not a shortcut.
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that summarizes a site for AI tools. It's cheap to add and we publish one on this site, but there's no public confirmation that ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity rely on it. Do it after the basics, not instead of them.
What does answer-style content look like?
Answer-style content puts the answer first and the detail second. Take a roofing company in Lake Country. Instead of a page that opens with “Welcome to our website”, a page on roof replacement opens with a direct answer to the question customers actually ask: what a roof replacement typically costs in the Okanagan, what changes the price and how long it takes. The details, photos and FAQs follow.
A few habits make content easy for AI to quote:
- Use real customer questions as headings: “How much does…”, “How long does…”, “Do you service West Kelowna?”
- Answer each one in the first 40 to 60 words, then explain
- Name your city, neighbourhoods and service area in plain words
- Give ranges and specifics rather than “contact us for pricing”
- Keep facts like hours, service area and prices identical everywhere they appear
- Add a short FAQ section to key service pages
What's on the AI visibility checklist?
Work through this list in order. The first half is where most Kelowna businesses have gaps.
- Google Business Profile verified, with the right primary category and every section complete
- Name, address and phone identical on your website and the main directories
- Listed on Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, not just Google
- A review request sent after every job, and every review answered
- One page per main service, each opening with a direct answer
- Service area pages for the places you actually work, such as Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon or Penticton
- Organization or LocalBusiness schema and FAQ schema on key pages
- Robots.txt allows search and AI crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot
- Pages render their main content without JavaScript
- Mentions on two or three trusted local or industry sites
- An llms.txt file, once the above is in place
- A monthly AI visibility test, logged
How do I test what AI says about my business?
You don't need special software to start. Run a simple monthly test:
- Write 10 to 15 prompts your customers would actually type, like “best dentist in Kelowna for families” or “who installs heat pumps in Vernon”. Include a couple with your business name, like “What do people say about [your business]?”
- Run them in several tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use a private browser window where you can.
- Record the results in a spreadsheet: were you mentioned, were you linked, which competitors appeared and which sources were cited.
- Check the facts. Wrong hours, an old address or a service you no longer offer usually trace back to an outdated listing. Fix it at the source.
- Repeat monthly with the same prompts. AI answers vary from one try to the next, so the trend over several months matters more than any single answer.
Can anyone guarantee my business will show up in ChatGPT?
No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. AI answers change from prompt to prompt, from model to model and from week to week. What good AI search optimization does is make your business the easiest one to find, verify and quote, then measure how often you're mentioned against a fixed set of prompts so you can see whether it's working.
What does AI search optimization cost?
AI search optimization is part of our SEO plans, because it builds on the same foundations. Our LaunchPad plan starts at $595/month plus $500 setup and covers Google Business Profile optimization, citation clean-up, on-page SEO for key pages and a monthly report. Our Ignition plan, at $1,500/month plus $1,000 setup, adds new content every month, a review workflow and AI search optimization. Prices are in CAD and exclude GST. Compare plans on the pricing page.

FAQ
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make your business easy to find and verify: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone across directories, steady genuine reviews, clear answer-style pages, and a site that AI search crawlers can reach. Then test the same prompts monthly. See AI search optimization.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so search engines and voice assistants can use it as a direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) makes your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to find, trust and cite. Both build on SEO.
Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?
Yes. It's one of the main sources of local business facts, and Google's AI Overviews draw on Google's own data. Keep your categories, hours, services and photos complete and current.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It's optional. It's cheap to add, but there's no public confirmation that the major AI tools rely on it. Fix your listings, reviews and content first.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
It varies. Fixing listings and your Google Business Profile can change results within a few months, while earning mentions and rankings for competitive services takes longer. Track a fixed set of prompts monthly to see the trend.
Can I check what ChatGPT says about my business for free?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask, note whether you're mentioned and which sources are cited, and repeat monthly. Or request a free AI visibility check.
